OC Sheriff warning of Mega Millions phone scam

In Local, News by OC Monitor Staff

HARTFORD, Ky. — The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of a phone scam involving someone falsely representing the Mega Millions lottery.

According to the sheriff’s office, a caller, identifying himself as a representative of Mega Millions, informs whoever answered the phone that they have won $3.5 million dollars and a 2023 GMC pick-up truck.

The caller then asks personal questions of the person who answered the phone. Eventually, the caller will require the person who answered the phone to obtain a gift card from a list of stores he gives. The caller says the gift card to be used for this transaction should be a Vanilla 1 gift card and asks that the gift card be made out for $500 to pay for the flatbed truck that will be transporting the GMC pick-up.

The caller will then ask for the number from the card to register it into their system. The caller will continue to pressure the person who answered the phone to give the number.

This is a scam.

The OCSO would like to remind our citizens to remain vigilant when dealing with unknown callers. Never give out personal information to anyone you don’t know. If a deal sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
