OWENSBORO, Ky. — Margaret “Cricket” Jones, 77, of Owensboro, passed away Feb. 7, 2018, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. She was born in Whitesville, Kentucky, on Jan. 13, 1941, to the late Neizer J. Westerfield and Roberta E. Russelburgh Westerfield.

She retired from Pinkerton Tobacco, later known as Swedish Match, after 28 years of service. She was a Kentucky Colonel, and a member of Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, where she was a former member of the choir and a Eucharistic Minister.

Cricket was a passionate gardener, often referred to as “the flower lady.” She made sure her yard was full of beautiful and colorful landscape. Cricket enjoyed watching her grandchildren swim in the summers or just spending time with them on the couch watching TV. Stock in the Coca-Cola company will certainly go down, with Cricket’s passing, as she was never seen without a diet Coke in her hand. She also was an avid bowler, which allowed her to win a trip to Washington D.C. Cricket had a unique style of decorating that she often used to win the Christmas light competitions in her neighborhood.

Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard A. Jones, who passed away Oct. 10, 1994; her daughter, Lisa Payne; her sister, Jesse Daughtry; her brother, Jim “Pete” Westerfield; and her grandson, Collin A. Jones.

Cricket leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughters, Christie (Mike) Clark and Carrie (fiancé Curtis Johnson, III) Jones, both of Owensboro; five grandchildren, Drew (Nikki) Coleman, Taylor Dickens, Kendal Goetz, Hayden Clark, Brady Clark; and two great-grandchildren, Eli Dickens, and Connor Whitfield. She is also survived by her twin sister, Dean Richards; her sisters, Sue Westerfield and Vena Mayfield, all of Owensboro, Dorothy (James) Roberts, of Reynolds Station, Kentucky, Linda (Jerry) Hoskins, of Centertown, Kentucky; and her brother, John Westerfield, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

A funeral mass will be 12:30 p.m. at Sts. Joseph and Paul Catholic Church, with burial to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. A celebration of Cricket’s life will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, and 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory.

In additional to flowers the family request expressions of sympathy to take the form of donations to the Honor House, c/o St. Benedicts Shelter; 1001 West 7th Street; Owensboro, KY 42301 in memory of Cricket. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
