LeonardWWhittakerLeonard W. Whittaker, 95, of Hartford passed away Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born Oct. 13, 1917, to the late Robert Lee Whittaker and Ina Chapman Whittaker in Ohio County, Ky.

Mr. Whittaker retired from Harkin Oil Company in Owensboro, Ky., as a Pumper of Oil Leases, was a member of Barnett’s Creek Baptist Church and former Treasurer, served in the U.S. Army during WWII, a member of Hartford Masonic Lodge #675 for 70 years and a Kentucky Colonel.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Yates Whittaker on March 8, 1999; one son, Freddie Leon Whittaker on July 10, 2008; one grandson, Timothy Leon Whittaker on Jan. 8, 2003; three brothers, Delbert Whittaker on June 21, 1922, Dolphus C. Whittaker on March 1, 1958, Elmer J. Whittaker on Nov. 17, 1993, and one sister, Beulah Mae Patton on Oct. 23, 1986.

Survivors include one son, Joe Whittaker (Shirley) of Hartford; five grandchildren, Angie Whittaker, Jeff Whittaker (Alicia), Sherry Magan (Robbie), Jennifer Woods (Tom) and Jason Whittaker (Kim); 18 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Winnie Stewart of Beaver Dam.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Barnett’s Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Raymond Ward and Bro. Matt Shaffer officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. with a tribute for family and friends at that time at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home followed by the funeral at 2 p.m. at the church.

Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at the funeral home. Burial will be in Barnett’s Creek Church Cemetery in Ohio County with full military rites by Wesley C. Phelps Honor Guard of Ohio County.
