HARTFORD, Ky. — The Ohio County Water District has issued a Boil Water Advisory after a 12-inch water main rupture around 10:30 a.m. this morning, Oct. 29.

The OCWD is making every effort to contact the more than 200 affected customers by phone and has shared the advisory on the OCWD Facebook page.

OCWD distribution crews requested emergency utility locates before excavation. Repairs are expected to begin within the next two hours, with completion anticipated around 6 p.m. this evening. This timeline is an estimate and may change as work progresses.

The advisory covers OCWD customers along KY 919, Shreve Road, Clinton Lane, Bucky Lane, McIntyre Lane, KY 54 East, Askins Road, KY 110, Willie Simmons Road, Sumner Lane, Old Askins Road, Tick Ridge Road, Fentress Lane, Moore-Owen Road, AJ Davidson Road, and Old Falls of Rough Road.

When water pressure drops below 20 psi, the system can become vulnerable to bacteria entering through breaks or leaks in the piping from surrounding groundwater or soil. This potential for contamination is why a precautionary boil water advisory is issued following a water main break that causes a loss of pressure.

As a precautionary measure, all water used for drinking or food preparation should be brought to a rolling boil for three minutes. Allow water to cool before use.

This advisory has been issued out of an abundance of caution, and affected customers will be notified when it is lifted. Completion of repairs and restoration of service do not mean the advisory has been lifted. It remains in effect until an official lifting notice is issued.
