FRANKFORT, Ky. — A recreational public health advisory has been issued for Caneyville Reservoir near Caneyville, Kentucky. Observations and a sample collected on Sept. 9 indicated the presence of a harmful algal bloom in this area. This reservoir is not utilized as a public drinking water source.
HABs occur when there are excess nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen), sunny conditions, warm temperatures, and low-flow or low-water conditions. They may appear as slick patches of bright-green paint, but closer inspection often reveals a grainy, sawdust-like texture.
Recreational activities that involve physical contact with water, such as swimming and wading, are not recommended in areas affected by HABs. Recommended precautions to avoid exposure to HABs can be found here.
If you have contact with water containing blue-green algae, rinse with clean, fresh water. In some cases, a rash will appear after prolonged exposure. Other symptoms may include stomach pain, headache, coughing, watery eyes, nose irritation, or sore throat. Children and people who are prone to respiratory allergies or asthma may be particularly sensitive to HABs. If symptoms persist, contact a healthcare provider.
