FORDSVILLE, Ky. — James S. “Jim” Howard, 79, of Fordsville, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2026. He was born on May 4, 1947, to the late William K. Howard and Flossie A. Reisz Vincent, of Whitesville, Kentucky.
Jim lived a life defined by faith, hard work, service, and love for his family and friends. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Although he rarely sought recognition for his service, he carried the values of honor, courage, and commitment with him throughout his life, and those who knew him respected the quiet strength and strong will that defined him.
Jim was an active and devoted member of Fairview Baptist Church, where his faith served as the foundation of his life. He found joy in God’s creation and loved spending time outdoors. Whether he was mowing his land, telling stories, helping a friend in need, or flying planes in his earlier years, he was happiest when he was creating or caring for something. One of his proudest accomplishments was building a cabin by hand—a place that reflected his craftsmanship, determination, and appreciation for the simple things in life. He took tremendous pride in his land and found peace in maintaining it.
Jim cherished his family as a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose quiet wisdom, steady presence, and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was proceeded in death by his brothers, David Michael, Lloyd and Bob Howard.
He is survived by his children, Tina (Jeff) Barnett, of Fordsville, Tonya (Jody) Barnett, of Fordsville, Crystal Howard, of Fordsville, and James (Ashley) Howard, of Owensboro, Kentucky. He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Jeffrey (Bree) Barnett, Keaton Gary, Aiden Taylor, Tanner Calloway, Jaci Howard, and Maylie Howard, along with several cherished nieces and nephews.
Jim’s legacy is one of service, faith, perseverance, and love for his family. He leaves behind not only the land he cared for and the cabin he built with his own hands, but also a lifetime of memories, values, and stories that will continue to guide those who loved him.
