MADISONVILLE, Ky. — With winter weather expected to hit the region beginning late tonight or early tomorrow, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet snow-fighting crews are prepped and ready to respond when needed.
KYTC District 2 personnel began pretreating state highways on Tuesday to prepare for the incoming weather front, which the National Weather Service expects to enter the District between 6-11 a.m. on Saturday. Heavy snowfall and/or icing is expected across the state, with potentially fast-changing road conditions.
Remember, bridges and overpasses freeze faster than the road, so use caution when crossing those structures during winter weather and freezing conditions.
Crews in all 11 District 2 counties are prepared to provide round-the-clock coverage to clear snow and ice as it falls. Motorists are asked to give snow plows on the roadway plenty of space to safely do their job of making that roadway safe.
Unusually low temperatures are also expected to settle in over the area until sometime next week. Not only can this slow the snow and ice removal process, it can also create additional hazards for motorists. All drivers are urged to keep an emergency car kit in their vehicle if they will be traveling during winter weather.
Emergency Car Kit Suggested Items for Drivers
- First aid kit
- Extra coat, gloves, and blankets or sleeping bag
- Non-perishable food and water
- Baby formula, diapers, wipes
- Flashlight with extra batteries
- Portable phone chargers
- Pet food, water, leash, bowl

What To Do if Traffic Signals Are Not Working:
- Flashing yellow, proceed with caution
- Flashing red, treat as a stop sign
- No signal lights, treat as a 4-way stop
What To Do When a Downed Power Line Is on the Roadway:
- Never touch or drive over a fallen power line; report the issue to the power company.
- If a power line has fallen on your vehicle, STAY INSIDE, do not exit, and call 911.
- Assume all downed power lines are live and DO NOT attempt to move.
