ECHOLS, Ky. — James L. Geary, 99, of Echols, went to his heavenly home on Jan. 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 25, 1924, in Echols, to the late Grealy Geary and Lura Scott Geary.

Mr. Geary retired from Peabody Coal, Ken Strip Mine, was a member of UMWA local #8941, and was a dedicated member of New Assembly Church. He proudly served in the United States Army during World War II.

Aside from his parents he was preceded in death by the love of his life for over 75 years, Minnie Cardwell Geary; sisters, Dorothy Abbott, Birdie Farris; brothers, Dale Geary, Homer Geary, WT Geary and Gordon Geary; and infant brother, Elmer Ray Geary.

Mr. Geary leaves behind to cherish his memory, five children, Wanda (Larry) Smith, of Beaver Dam, Kentucky, Lee Roy (Lu Ann) Geary, of Owensboro, Kentucky, Larry Joe (Karen) Geary, of Hanson, Kentucky, James “Dee Dee” (Connie) Geary, of Beaver Dam, and Becky (Carl) Williams, of Echols; 14 grandchildren, Kami Smith, Kendall (Crystal) Smith, Ryan Geary, Kimberly (Tracy) Hays, Kenneth (Shana) Geary, Jason (Tina) Geary, Denise (Danny) Young, Crystal Goodfriend, Suzanne (Tike) Barton, Justin (Jennifer) Geary, Sabrina (Wes) Lake, Jennifer (Josh) Wilson, James (Jessica) Williams and Jesse (Charlsie) Williams; 38 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; 20 great-great-grandchildren, with one on the way; sister, Alma Goff, of Beaver Dam; and sister-in-law, Peggy Geary, of Bardstown, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, Kentucky with Rev. Lealin Geary officiating. Burial will follow in Echols Cemetery in Echols. Friends may visit with Mr. Geary’s family from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 29, and 10 a.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
