Ky. Office of Rural Health to Host First Kentucky EMS Leadership Academy

In Local, News, State by OC Monitor Staff

LEXINGTON, Ky. — The Kentucky Office of Rural Health will host the first Kentucky EMS Leadership Academy, beginning this December.

The academy, which will run for eight months, is designed to provide members of the emergency medical services profession with the knowledge and skills necessary to take on significant roles and responsibilities in organizations and to succeed. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s sessions will be offered in a virtual format.

“We think the academy offers a unique opportunity for the Commonwealth’s EMS professionals to invest in expanding their knowledge and cultivating skills, and we hope participation in it will help inspire good leaders into becoming great leaders,” said KORH Director Ernie Scott. “The greater exposure you have to leadership and management concepts and the more developed your skills, the more likely you’ll have a chance to succeed in those circumstances when your leadership abilities are tested.”

Participation in the academy is open to all EMS professionals working throughout the Commonwealth — those who are already working in leadership positions, as well as those who may be planning to enter a leadership role in the future.

Sessions will begin in December 2020 and run through July 2021.

Four webinar-based, interactive training sessions will be held every other month, beginning in December. Session topics include budgeting and finance in December, conflict resolution in February, compliance and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations in April and employee engagement in June. Each session will last about 90 minutes.

During alternating months, January, March, May and July, participants will meet with a veteran EMS administrator from their region and receive one-on-one mentoring.

Academy graduates will receive a scholarship, provided by the Kentucky Ambulance Providers Association, to cover the registration fee to attend the 2021 Kentucky EMS Conference and Expo. In addition, graduates will also receive continuing education credits.

There is no cost to participate in the academy.

An academy application can be found online at https://bit.ly/2GpLeRT. The deadline to apply is at 5 p.m. ET Friday, Oct. 30. A limited number of applicants will be invited to participate.
