KSP warning potential victims of scam

In News, State by OC Monitor Staff

FRANKFORT, Ky. — The Kentucky State Police has received numerous complaints of a scam targeting people listed on the Kentucky Sex Offender Registry.

The initial investigations indicate the scammer identifies himself as a police officer and tells the registrants they must immediately pay a fee for a variety of reasons. Victims are being told to load money onto a prepaid card (iTunes, CVS, Google Play, etc.), then provide the card information to the scammer.

The KSP would like to remind you law enforcement officers do not call and ask for payments over the phone. If someone calls to ask, or pressure, you for a payment with a prepaid or reloadable card, or if you believe it is a scam, you can contact your nearest KSP Post, local law enforcement, the Attorney General’s office at 888-432-9257, or visit https://ag.ky.gov/consumer-protec…/complaints/…/default.aspx .
