OC Sheriff warns about home rental scam

In Local, News by OC Monitor Staff

HARTFORD, Ky. — The Ohio County Sheriff Tracy Beatty is warning residents of Ohio County about a scam involving the rental of a home in Beaver Dam.

According to Sheriff Beatty, his office was recently informed of a scam involving a home at 1000 North Main Street in Beaver Dam. The home, which was recently sold, was seen on a website advertised as being for rent. According to the website, people interested in renting the property are asked to buy a Walmart gift card for $500, and send it to a person known as “Reverend Francis.”

The Sheriff’s Office has verified the home has been sold, and is not for rent.

Sheriff Beatty also wanted to remind citizens gift cards are often difficult to trace, and anyone conducting business in this way is subject to losing their money without much luck in getting it returned. Most landlords would not require payment in this form, and a renter is always better off having proof of monetary transactions, such as checks, money orders, debit card, etc.
