
He retired from ARKLA Corporation as a welder and was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Charles was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, the AMVets, and a former member of the American Legion. Charles enjoyed cooking, collecting coins, guns, civil war mementoes, and entering the backyard barbeque cook off at the Bar-B-Que Festival.
Along with his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Rice Newton; his daughters, Glenda Simmons and Charlotte Stogner; his sisters, Lucille, Margaret, Mildred, Betty, Dorothy, Linda, Susie, Bonnie, Evelyn, Lillian; and his brothers, Danny, James, and Kenneth.
Charles is survived by his children, Charles (fiancée Marsha) Newton Jr., of Owensboro, and Steve (Robin) Newton, of Henderson, Kentucky; 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; his brother, George Newton, of Owensboro; and his sister, Helen Herode, of Hawesville, Kentucky.
Expressions of sympathy make take the form of donations to AMVets; 2600 West 2nd Street; Owensboro, Kentucky 42301. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Haley McGinnis Funeral Home & Crematory, with Tim Hall officiating. Entombment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
