OC Sheriff warns county about credit card skimmers

In Local, News by OC Monitor Staff

OHIO COUNTY, Ky. — Ohio County Sheriff Tracy Beatty is warning Ohio County of a scam targeting people who buy gas with a credit or debit card.

According to Sheriff Beatty, his office received information a group may have placed card skimmers at a gas station in Ohio County. Those who reported this to the Sheriff’s Office believe it happened at Minit Mart, a Marathon Station on U.S. 231 S near the Western Kentucky Parkway in Beaver Dam.

Scammers used the information stolen from the cards in Muhlenberg County at Hibbetts Sports and Walmart. The potential suspects involved were described as possibly Cuban or Hispanic men in a newer white Chevy Suburban.

If you see anything suspicious, call the Ohio County Sheriff’s Office at 270-298-4444 or other local law enforcement and share your information.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself from credit card skimmers:

  • Pay for your gas inside, instead of at the pump.
  • If the security seal on the gas pump is broken, you should be suspicious.
  • Choose gas pumps closest to the building, within sight of the employees inside.
  • Use a credit card, not a debit card, when paying for gas at the pump.
  • Pay attention when you’re sliding your card in the slot. If it feels weird or different from the other times you’ve done it, then cancel the transaction and pay inside.
