WESTERN KENTUCKY — While many communities and citizens of United States and especially Western Kentucky are gearing up for the total eclipse next month, NASA is warning people to be careful when they purchase safety glasses for viewing the eclipse.

According to a press release, NASA has instructed those purchasing safety glasses for viewing the Aug. 21 eclipse to look carefully before purchasing and to examine those already purchased to avoid eye injuries.

NASA now recommends only using eclipse glasses with ISO 12312-2 printed on them that have been manufactured by four U.S. companies: American Paper Optics, Rainbow Symphony, Thousand Oaks Optical, and TSE 17.

Buying your eclipse glasses on Amazon does not ensure their safety. Make sure to check your eclipse glasses and viewers to verify that they have the correct ISO designation and were manufactured by one of the four companies recognized by NASA as legitimate.

It is also recommended to not use any glasses with wrinkled or scratched lenses and aren’t recommended for us if they are more than 3 years-old.
