HARTFORD, Ky. — William Lee “Bill” Hawkins, 87, of Hartford, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 7, 2017, at Beaver Dam Nursing and Rehab. He was born Oct. 26, 1929, in Madisonville, Ky., to the late Ollie D. and Ethel Mae Edwards Hawkins.

Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran where he served during the Korean War, a member of Hartford Baptist Church, a heavy equipment mechanic for Peabody Coal Company, and a Kentucky Colonel.

During his free time Bill enjoyed restoring older cars, watching westerns, he was an excellent mechanic working on older vehicles and diesel engines. Bill was known for being the best mechanic for working on older vehicles.

Aside from his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lorrene Hawkins, and one brother, Charles Ray Hawkins.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra (Ron) English, of Hartford, David (Tammy) Hawkins, of Centertown, Ky., Steve (Patricia) Hawkins, of Owensboro, Ky., and Jeff (Patty) Hawkins, of Beaver Dam, Ky.; and sister, Bettye Jo Jobe, of Evansville, Ind. Bill was blessed with eight grandchildren, Jeremiah, Noah, Cassie, Nick Hawkins, Megan (Jed) Richardson, Suzanna (Davey) Mills, John (Jevetta) Ashby, and Jeff Ashby; and five great-grandchildren, Lilly, Jessie-James, Chloe, Jadelyn, and Penny.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 12, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford, with Rev. Jeff Hawkins officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford. Military rites service will be provided by Wesley Phelps Honor Guard. Friends may visit with the family Bill Hawkins from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Sunday and 9 a.m. until time of service on Monday.
