BEAVER DAM, Ky. — National non-profit KaBOOM! is honoring Beaver Dam with a 2017 Playful City USA designation for the fourth time.

Playful City USA honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow and develop important life skills. These communities are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents.

The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities from Richmond, Virginia to Richmond, California that make it as easy as possible for kids to play. In total, these communities feature more than 14,000 safe and engaging playspaces that serve more than 4 million kids. Beaver Dam is one of ten communities in Kentucky to receive the designation.

Beaver Dam City officials believe the well-being of our community starts with the well-being of our kids, and play is critical to their ability to thrive. That’s why local leaders team with residents and other organizations to create great, safe places for kids to play and strive to give special, kid-friendly activities and events.

From the Strawberry Festival to the Christmas Festival, Beaver Dam is doing what it takes to make it as easy as possible for kids to play, so that they can learn, explore, grow and just be kids. Playgrounds and youth athletic facilities are a part of what makes childhood special for kids. The City has helped to provide a number of activities such as Kid’s Day at the Farmer’s Market and Treats on the Trail as well as partner with other youth related organizations such as the youth artist guild, youth baseball, high school soccer boosters, band boosters and many others

“It’s important that we do what we can to meet the needs of the children of our community,” said Beaver Dam Mayor Paul Sandefur. “These young people are our future, the very backbone of our community in the coming years.”

Sandefur continued, “We do it for them. Our philosophy, ‘We do things in Beaver Dam that you don’t expect in Beaver Dam’ and will continue with that train of thought.”

As cities are becoming hotbeds for innovation, communities across the country are creating inventive ways to attract and retain residents. Playful City USA honorees are taking bold action to make sure kids have great places to play – all with the ultimate goal of making play the easy choice for all kids, no matter where they live. In addition to the playground down the street, Playful City USA communities are turning grocery stores, vacant lots, crosswalks and sidewalks into opportunities for play.

“We are thrilled to recognize Beaver Dam for putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “We applaud communities that believe in the well-being of our kids and provides to that end. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.”
