Ira Gene Hawkins, 75, of Owensboro, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015, at his residence. He was born in Ohio County to the late Ray and Lydia Norris Hawkins, had worked for 37 years at Yager Material, and was a member of Owensboro Christian Church.
Gene loved horses and driving a wagon, and was a member of the Greenbriar Wagon Club. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping, boating and fishing. He never met a stranger, enjoyed time spent with his family, and had a wonderful sense of humor.
Gene was also preceded in death by his brother, Austin Hawkins.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Mary L. Hawkins; daughters, Vickie Hundley (William), of Owensboro, and Missy Rock (Kevin), of Beaver Dam; stepdaughters, Debbie Brown (Randall), of Owensboro, Jenny Sholar (Dan), of Frankfort, and Linda Love (Frank), of Owensboro; grandchildren, Zach, Rachel, Sky, Jessi, Matt, Cassie, Jared, Stevie, Courtney, Jeff, Brandon and Kristin; great-grandchildren, Avery, Nolan, Khloe, Briley, Brady, Aidan, Melanie, Peyton and one due in August; brothers, Opal Hawkins and M.C. Hawkins; sisters, Ruby Cain and Hazel McBrayer, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at Noon Friday in the chapel of Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday and after 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery.
