The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for Western Kentucky through late Saturday. That watch may be upgraded.
As we prepare for heavy rain through much of the weekend, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, highway crews are asking motorists to start thinking about some of the hazards they will encounter as they are out and about.
Never underestimate the power of water, the condition of a flooded area, or how fast water is flowing. These errors in judgment can be fatal.
Over half of all flood-related drownings occur when vehicles are driven into hazardous floodwaters. A flooded area with six inches of rushing water can knock a man off his feet and an area with as little as a foot of rushing water can sweep a vehicle off the roadway.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet joins NOAA and area police agencies to offer these driving safety tips:
· Monitor a NOAA weather radio, or reliable local news source for updated weather information.
· Maintain a high level of awareness of changing weather conditions and water levels at your location.
· If flooding occurs, get to higher ground. Get out of areas subject to flooding.
