MORGANTOWN, Ky. — Richard Dale Ashby, 60, passed away peacefully Sept. 15, 2025, at his favorite place and his pride and joy (Cedar Ridge Speedway), surrounded by his wife and children listening to the grandchildren make some laps around the track. Born on Thursday, Sept. 9, 1965, in Hartford, Kentucky, Richard’s life was a testament to his love for his family and his passion for racing.
Richard was a renowned figure in the racing community, where he left an indelible mark. His passion for motorsports was evident to all who knew him, as he found joy and excitement in every form of racing-from dirt to drag to asphalt. His competitive spirit led him to win multiple championships across various tracks. In 2011, he realized a lifelong dream by becoming a track owner, a role in which he thrived for over a decade. Richard’s love for racing extended to his family, as he spent the last 14 years teaching his grandchildren the intricacies of driving and working on race cars.
Beyond the racetrack, Richard was a man of great character. He was the type of person who would sacrifice his own comfort to ensure that others were taken care of. His pride in his endeavors was matched only by his wisdom, strength, ambition, and, as his family fondly remembers, his stubbornness. A true family man, Richard’s guidance and love were the cornerstones upon which his family built their lives.
Richard Dale Ashby’s life was one of purpose and passion. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his legacy will continue to race on in the hearts of his loved ones. Richard’s life was a race well run, and the finish line was met with grace, surrounded by the family he adored.
Preceded in death by his parents, James Ashby and Zonie (Doll) Riggs; and his brother, Gary Ashby, Richard’s legacy is carried on by his loving wife of 42 years, Charlene Ashby (Mikie), of Caneyville, Kentucky; and three brothers, Darrell Ashby, of Beaver Dam, Kentucky, Earl Ashby, and Jim Ashby, both of Caneyville. Richard’s spirit also lives on through his four children, Ricky Ashby (Ashley), of Caneyville, T.C. Ashby (Jessica), of Morgantown, Kevin Ashby (Savannah), of Morgantown, and Kimmie Carroll, of Caneyville, as well as his bonus son, Chad Mudd, of Caneyville.
Richard’s joy was multiplied by his 19 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Jacob Ashby (Jessie), Weston Gaither, Ally Ashby, Barry Ashby, Evana Martin, Khloe Gaither, Alexis Ashby, Mason Ashby, Baylea Carroll, Bella Ashby, Lily Carroll, Jaxon Ashby, Charlie Ashby, Raylen Carroll, Joshua Carroll, Lucas Ashby, Willow Ashby, Aarlo Ashby, Lucy Ashby, Zoie Ashby, Novallee Spradlin, and Lakelee Spradlin.
