OWENSBORO, Ky. — Eugene “EJ” Thompson, 92, of Owensboro passed away Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025, under the care of Hospice and Palliative Care of W. Kentucky. The Daviess County, Kentucky, native was born May 23, 1932, to the late William Goebel Thompson and Myra Victoria Payne Thompson.
EJ graduated from St. Francis High School, class of 1950. He retired from South Central Bell after 29 years of service. EJ was a longtime member of Precious Blood Catholic Church. E.J. enjoyed many years of fishing and beach time, and loved his precious dogs, Chico and Chi-Chi.
In addition to his parents, EJ also was preceded in death by his first wife, Rita Hayden Thompson and all his five brothers and sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Carol “June” Witherspoon Thompson; seven children, Ray Thompson (Jackie) of Birdseye, Indiana, Marie Robinson, of Liberty, North Carolina, Mary Dean, of Sandston, Virginia, Deborah Peech (Ricky), of Hartford, Kentucky, Joe Thompson (Tomasina), of Apopka, Florida, Rita Smith, of Louisville, Kentucky, and John Thompson (Marnie), of Chicago, Illinois; stepsons, Bob Hamby, of Henderson, Kentucky, and Jeff Phillips (Susan), of Evansville, Indiana; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral mass officiated by Fr. Carl McCarthy will be at 11 a.m. Monday, March 3, at Precious Blood Catholic Church, where visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of mass. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery.
