OWENSBORO, Ky. — James “Wimpy” Leonard Wimsatt, 106, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2025, at Chatauqua Health Care in Owensboro. He was born in Ohio County, Kentucky, to the late Thomas and Iva Lanham Wimsatt.
Mr. Wimsatt was a World War II Veteran of the Army Air Corp (U.S. Air Force). He attained the rank of staff sergeant and was awarded four Bronze Battle Stars.
Leonard retired from General Electric after 25 years of service. His work for them included a move to Florida, where he lived for 20 years. He and his wife were active and longtime members of First Christian Church.
Mr. Wimsatt thoroughly enjoyed painting and drawing. His gallery was mostly comprised of work that allowed him to relieve stress and build up Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 77 years, Gertrude “Trudy” Wimsatt in 2022 and siblings, Lora, Haven, Cecil, Earnest, Marteen, Elizabeth, Eugene, Beatrice, Pauline, Imogene and Josephine.
Mr. Wimsatt is survived by a sister, Frances Ingersoll, and many generations of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 24, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Owensboro Memorial Gardens.
