ROCKVALE, Ky. — George Rogers Lewis, 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 15, 2025. Born on July 31, 1938, in Rockvale, he grew up in Evansville, Indiana.
From an early age, he learned the values of faith, hard work, and family—principles that would guide him throughout his life.
In 1957, George married the love of his life, Wanda Whitsell Lewis, and together they built a life rooted in love, devotion, and faith. As a deacon at Fordsville Baptist Church for more than 60 years, he taught the boys’ Sunday school class, shaping the hearts and minds of countless young men with his wisdom and unwavering belief in the love of Jesus.
George worked as the manager of the Fordsville Glove Factory before retiring from Kimball International. Though a dedicated and hardworking man, his true joy was found in the simple moments—hunting and fishing, or finding a quiet rock in the woods to sit and take in the beauty of nature. His deep faith was evident in every aspect of his life, and he let his actions speak as a testament to God’s love.
Above all, George cherished his family. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he never missed an opportunity to tease, joke, or “pick” on them with a twinkle in his eye. His love was both steady and playful, leaving them with cherished memories and lessons they will carry forever.
He is preceded in death by his parents, George Rufus Lewis and Katie Stone Lewis; his brother, Jerry Lee Lewis; and his grandson, George Randall Lewis.
George is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Wanda Lewis; his children, George Kelly (Sue) Lewis, of Falls of Rough, Kentucky, Cindy (Dennis) Wedding, of Philpot, Kentucky, Lucretia (Ed) Curtis, of Williamstown, Kentucky, and Jeff (Shanon) Lewis, of Auburn, Washington; his grandchildren, Eddie (Tammy) Lewis, Stephen (Stephanie) Lewis, Drew (Ashley) Wedding, Zach (Kara) Wedding, and Kaitlyn (Charlie) Johnson; and 10 great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy.
George’s life will be honored and celebrated at Geary Funeral Home in Fordsville. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will follow in Macedonia Cemetery.
His legacy of faith, love, and laughter will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Ohio County Hospice in his honor.
