HARTFORD, Ky. — Jim Gross, 92, of Hartford, passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2025, at his home in Hartford. James Edward Gross was born May 18, 1932, in McLean County, Kentucky, to the late Robert Lee and Mable Rightmyer Gross and was married to the former Lynda Dean Decker on Oct. 16, 1987.
Jim was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the Marine Corps. He later worked at Murphy Miller in Owensboro for 20 years and was a member of Nickel Ridge Holiness Church in Daviess County, Kentucky.
Jim was a member of both the Ohio County and McLean County Veterans of Foreign Wars Posts, serving on both of their honor guard units, was a member of the American Legion, was a member of the AM Vets in Owensboro, Kentucky, was a member of DAV in Ohio County, Kentucky, and was a member of Marine Corps League in Owensboro, where he was honored as Marine of the year in 2012. He was also a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels.
Jim was a very patriotic person. He loved the American Flag and what it stands for. Jim also loved to help people and anyone in need. He was active in the Toys for Tots program in Ohio County for several years.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Lynda Dean Gross, who died Jan. 19, 2015; by a daughter, Diana Gross; a son, Jamie Lee Gross; two grandsons, Steve Willis and Collin Gross; three brothers, Gerald Gross, Junior Gross, and Terry Gross; and by a sister, Peggy Taylor.
Jim is survived by a son, B.J. Gross, of Hartford; two daughters, Janet Willis (Danny), of Owensboro, and Dana Cauley (Jeff), of Utica, Kentucky; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Jackie Gross (Sherri), of Oak Grove, Missouri, Billy Gross (Marsha), of Madison, Tennessee, and Darrell Gross (Pam), of Dickinson, Tennessee; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at Muster Funeral Homes, Calhoun Chapel. Burial will be in the Calhoun Cemetery in McLean County with Military Honors conducted by the McLean County Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post #5415. Friends may visit with Jim’s family from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Thursday at Musters in Calhoun.
