BEAVER DAM, Ky. — Anna Laura Young Abney, 94, of Beaver Dam, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 7, 2025. She was born on Jan. 30, 1930, in Hartford, to the late Wavey Clayton “W.C.” and Fannie Belle Hendricks Young.
She was a lifetime member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church.
Ann married the love of her life, Leonis, on Dec. 13, 1947, worked for General Electric and retired after 25 years of loyal service. In her younger days she was a go-getter, member of the Morning Glories bowling league, Sunday school teacher, president of the homemakers club, and her greatest task, raising three children.
As she aged, she never stepped away from being a light in her community, always volunteering her time at the senior center and with hospice. But the times she cherished most were the ones spent with her family. She was the matriarch, her loved ones will always remember her as the greatest storyteller who had the biggest love for each and every one of her family members. No family gathering was complete without one of Granny’s famous speeches, always expressing how blessed she was and how thankful to have all she had been given.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Leonis Miller Abney; daughters, Anita Joann Abney and Tina Susan Brown; grandson, Jason Brown; brothers, Malcolm Ray Young and Larry Ellis Young; and son-in-law, Roger Brown.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Anthony Leonis “Tony” (Sheila) Abney; grandchildren, Angie (Todd) Leisure, Chad (Lindsey) Abney, Stacy (Quentin) Embrey, Jeremy (Stefanie) Brown, and Josh Brown; great-grandchildren, Kelsey (Cory) Wallace, Kamryn (Saulyer) Logsdon, Karlee Leisure, Jade (Jackson Embry) Abney, Bode (Chessie Drake) Abney, Taylor (Seth) Stevens, Teegan (Bailey Landrum) Embrey, Tucker Embrey, Hannah (Drew) Bradley, Colton (Haeli Browning) Brown, Makayla (Tyler) Wathen, and Bryson Brown; great-great-grandchildren, Maverick and Shepherd Wallace, Walker Embry, and Sailor and Duke Wathen; sister, Ermal Dean Burton; along with several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held Saturday, Jan. 11, at 1 p.m. at Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, with Bro. Benny Phelps officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, Jan. 10, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. and again on Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service.
The family asks that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to Hospice of Ohio County.
