BEAVER DAM, Ky. — Donnie S. Hoskins, 83, passed away on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. He departed this earthly world at the Heartford House in Owensboro, Kentucky. He was born May 29, 1941, and shared the same birthday as his mother.
Donnie was from Beaver Dam and lived in the Rockport community of Ohio County. He was a member of West Providence Baptist Church. Woodworking and quail hunting were two of his favorite hobbies, but nothing surpassed his love of basketball.
Mr. Hoskins played on the 1958 Beaver Dam High State Tournament team and was a member of the All-State Basketball team that year. He played college basketball at Itawamba Junior College and later at Texas Wesleyan College.
A graduate of Murray State University, he completed his degree in industrial arts and physical education. His teaching career began at Castle High School, Indiana. Soon thereafter, he began instructing in the Ohio County School System. He taught physical education, industrial arts, and woodworking classes for 32 years.
Coaching a team was one of his greatest loves. He coached every year he was employed in one or more sports including tennis, baseball, football, and basketball. He was head basketball coach at Ohio County High School in the 80’s.
He was predeceased by his mother, Myrtle Hoskins, and father, Roy Hoskins. Aside from his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Hoskins, and a sister, Colleen Stewart.
He is survived by his son, Michael Hoskins, of Beaver Dam; his daughter, Melissa Hoskins Acquaviva (Jim), of Beaver Dam; six grandchildren, Darren Michael Porter, of Louisville, Kentucky, Janeanne Porter Smith, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Marybeth/Aspen Acquaviva, of Murray, Kentucky, Chandler Acquaviva, of Nashville, Tennessee, Brett Hoskins and Kate Hoskins, both of Beaver Dam. Also surviving is his sister, Marlene Westerfield, of Lewisport, Kentucky, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam with Rev. Greg Hillard officiating. Burial will follow in West Providence Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may visit with Donnie’s family on Wednesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Additional visitation will be available from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
