HARTFORD, Ky. — Lonnie Phelps Jr., 86, of Hartford, was called home to the Lord on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born March 12, 1938, in Ohio County, Kentucky, to the late Lonnie Phelps Sr. and Bernice Ward Phelps.

Second only to his love for Christ, was Lonnie’s devotion to his wife, Joanna, and their family. Lonnie was a member of Cedar Grove General Baptist Church where he served as Deacon for 62 years.

Retired from Peabody Coal Company, Lonnie kept busy in his garage with tractor and automotive repairs or “supervising” his sons and grandson. Lonnie, known affectionately as “Junior,” was an avid UK basketball fan and enjoyed sharing stories and laughter with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, Lonnie was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Anna Claire Taylor; two brothers, Eugene and John Phelps; and sisters, Pauline Daugherty, Ann Bullock, Deloris Geary, and Sudie Pendley.

Lonnie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joanna Embry Phelps; sons, Steven (Christine) Phelps, of Owensboro, Kentucky, Mark (Jody) Phelps, of Hartford, and Joseph (Angelic) Phelps, of Louisville, Kentucky; grandchildren, Tony (Kalin) Phelps, Sarai (Nathan) Taylor, Steven Phelps, Rebekah Phelps, April (Andrew) Salois, William Phelps, Miranda Phelps, Daniel Phelps, and Wendy (Jodi) Worthington Black; great-grandchildren, Alex Phelps, Judah Taylor, and Miriam Salois; brothers, J.C. (Janet) Phelps and Walter (Bonnie) Phelps; forever daughter, Kathy Ball; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, at Cedar Grove General Baptist Church in Olaton, Kentucky, with Bro. David Embry and Bro. Larry Embry officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at Cedar Grove General Baptist Church. Visitors are requested to wear UK blue with ball caps permitted.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to Cedar Grove General Baptist Church.
