OLATON, Ky. — Gerald Wynn Smither, 78, of Olaton, passed away Aug. 10, 2024, at approximately 6 p.m. He was born Sept. 8, 1945.
He served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He had a degree in biology and was an immunochemist, sometimes called a nuclear biologist. He managed an Animal Research Farm in Missouri under Sigma Aldrich, was into historical anthropology with costumes and weapons of the period, and visited many places in the United States.
He retired to Kentucky—the place of his birth. After he retired he wrote 17 books including two political fiction, three historical fiction, two fantasy, one poetry, and nine Christian-based books.
He was a faithful member of the New Baymus Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by one son, Ian Richard.
He is survived by his mother, Margarette Smither; a brother, Joel Smither; his wife of 57 years, Janet Vail Smither; and one living son, Sean A. Smither. He has two grandchildren, Ashton and William Smither, and many nephews and nieces.
Gerald was a diabetic, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The American Diabetes Association at or the charity of your choice.
Private services will be conducted at a later date. Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam, Kentucky is in charge of arrangements.
