HARTFORD, Ky. — Kay Johnson, 87, passed away on May 27, 2024, peacefully at her home. She was born on Aug. 25, 1936, in Milan, Tennessee, to Granville and Eva Harris.
She graduated from Kentucky Baptist Nursing School and went on to work as a registered nurse, retiring after 28 years at NSA. She was a member of Hartford United Methodist Church.
Kay was the true definition of a caregiver for her family and friends. After retirement, she devoted her efforts and time to her granddaughters, her family members, and others who needed anything – a friendly visit, a trip to the doctor, or anything more she could do to be helpful. And it was all done with a grin and without complaint. She also loved planning family reunions with her extended family and was always the most hospitable hostess for these gatherings.
She was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan. She enjoyed many trips to watch the team play at SEC tournaments with her friends, probably causing all kinds of ruckus while there.
Travel was a huge part of her life. From the beach to visits across the sea, she enjoyed new experiences and planning her next adventure. She was always ready for another “last hoorah”. She loved taking her granddaughters on trips that interested them, yet another example of how she put others first and wanted to experience life’s wonders with those she loved.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Ray Johnson; son, Mark Johnson; and son-in-law, Bob Black. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Sara Black (Barry Hall); granddaughters, Kaitlin (Corey) Glass, Jessika (Tyler) Taylor, and Natalie O’Bryan; and great-grandchildren Leslie Glass, Mila Glass, and Truett Taylor. She also leaves many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held on May 29, at 2 p.m. at Bevil Bros Funeral Home. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Ohio County or the Faithful Friends Sunday School Class at Hartford United Methodist Church (141 E. Center St., Hartford, KY 42347).
To Kay, we say farewell for now, but we will never forget the light she brought into our lives. May she rest in peace, and may we continue to honor her memory by living our lives to the fullest.
