HARTFORD, Ky. — Reverend Alva E. Sutton, 87, of Hartford, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at his home under the care of Hospice of Ohio County. The Breckinridge County, Kentucky, native was born June 28, 1936, to the late William Edward Sutton and Flona Elliott Sutton.

Alva attended Daviess County High School and grew up in church. He would often say he was a “jack-of-all-trades and a master of none” and “can’t never could”. Alva worked as a maintenance supervisor at Pinkerton Tobacco and retired from there in 1991. He loved horses, gardening, music, singing, and playing the guitar. Alva had a great work ethic that was the result of his many years of working on the farm. A man of strong character, he exhibited tenacity, determination, and passion for life. His family thought he walked on water. He had a strong faith and preached for over thirty years as the pastor of Phillips Chapel Worship Assembly in Owensboro.

In addition to his parents, Alva also was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Rowan, and a young brother, Elroy Sutton.

Those left to cherish his memory include his four children, Ava Sturgeon (Frank), of Hawesville, Kentucky, Patty Alsip (Chris), of Utica, Kentucky, Kelly Gossett (Monnie Brown), and Eddie Sutton (Rachelle), both of Hartford; 11 grandchildren, Aaron, Joshua, Jacob, Lynsie, Jeremiah, Andrew, Leslie, Jessica, Laura, Luke, and Beau; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, David O. Sutton, of Anchorage, Alaska; several nieces and nephews, and his loyal dogs, Ellie and Teddy.

The funeral will be at noon Saturday, May 11, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Kelly Cemetery.
