OWENSBORO, Ky. — Warren Hurst, of Owensboro, passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2024.
Warren taught PE and Health for Owensboro Public Schools for over 30 years at Southern Middle School, Owensboro Middle School, and Owensboro High School. Warren left a lasting effect on many lives as a teacher and coach at the middle school level and the varsity level at OHS. He served as the varsity coach of the Lady Red Devils from 1990 to 1995 and golf coach from 1996 to 2000. His 1992 Lady Devil team won the 3rd Region title in dramatic fashion with wins over Hancock County, Ohio County, and Breckenridge County, all in overtime, with the championship game going into double overtime. He loved his players and enjoyed great pride in their accomplishments in life.
An avid golfer as both a mentor and player, Warren left his mark on golf in Owensboro. As President of the Board of Directors at Windridge Country Club, Warren oversaw the redesign and update of the facilities. In retirement, he worked for the City of Owensboro at both Ben Hawes and Hillcrest.
As a player, Warren took great pride in being the only letter winner in golf at his high school alma mater Hartford High School in Ohio County, Kentucky; participating in two state championships in 1962 and 1963. Later, as a student at Texas Wesleyan College, Warren participated in the 1965 NAIA national championship helping the Rams to a 4th place finish.
Warren was also a veteran, serving in the United States Army from 1969 to 1971 and the Indiana National Guard, where he retired as a Captain in 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Beulah Bass Hurst, and brother, Paul Hurst, of New Albany, Indiana.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Ann; his son, Kevin, of Louisville, Kentucky; daughter-in-law, Jenny; and twin grandsons, Nathaniel and Carter; his beloved sister, Elaine Seitz, of Terre Haute, Indiana; and mother-in-law, Ramona Grant, of Hartford, Kentucky.
