KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Virginia Ruth Alexander Flener, 91, of Kansas City, passed away on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at the Kingswood Senior Living Community. She was born on May 27, 1931, to the late Rev. Alta Herbert (A.H.) and Birdie Virginia
Pitcock Alexander.
She was an elementary teacher and reading recovery teacher in Kentucky. Ruth graduated from Scarritt College in Nashville, Tennessee, and received her Master of Arts in Education from Western Kentucky University. She was a member of Resurrection, A United Methodist Church in Leawood, Kansas.
She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, art, and Christian service.
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Rev. Dr. Kermit E. Flener, Sr.; and her sibling, Rev. Herbert Alexander Jr.
Ruth is survived by her children; Pastor Ed Flener (Charlotte), of Kansas City, and Rev. Steve Flener (Oma), of Hartford, Kentucky; five grandchildren, Dr. Charity Lovitt (Andy), of Redmond, Washington, Matt Flener (Carrie), of Kansas City, Becky Heimann (Ben), of Overland Park, Kansas, Rev. Dr. Loletuth Kalz (John), of Madisonville, Kentucky, and Dr. Erin Boone (Matt), of Overland Park; as well as 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Service will be held at Smith Funeral Home, Morgantown, Kentucky, on Saturday, May 13, at 11 a.m. Saturday visitation will begin at 9 a.m. until time of service. Burial at the Hill Haven Memory Gardens Cemetery. A Memorial Service
will be held at Kingswood Senior Living Community, Kansas City, Missouri, on June 17 at 1 p.m.
