BEAVER DAM, Ky. — The Camaro Crash Helmet, the Mississippi Mudflap, the Tennessee Top Hat, the Nebraska Neck Warmer, these are the many terms of endearment used for one of the most popular hairstyles ever invented, the Mullett.

The mullet was THE hairstyle of the 80’s, and for some, the 80’s never died, as the Mullett is making a huge comeback.

But for Big Scott Collard, don’t call it a comeback, his mullett’s been here for years, 34 years to be exact. Collard hasn’t cut his mullet since 1987 and is hoping to ride his Kentucky Waterfall all the way to win the 2021 USA Mullet Championship.

Collard, an administrator of the Facebook group The Mullet That Changed My Life AD, was helping the USA Mullet Championships with publicity through the Facebook group. Collard didn’t plan on entering the contest and when he did, it wasn’t for the reason you might think.

“I just wanted to donate my $10 (entry fee) because it goes toward Stop Soldier Suicide,” Collard said.

The USA Mullet Championships started in 2020 as a contest for kids with radical mullets. For 2021 a men’s and women’s division were added to the contest, partly due to the success of the kid’s mullet contest. However, there was another reason for the added divisions.

“There’s been a big following since (the start of the pandemic),” Collard said. “Because of COVID-19, nobody was getting out and getting a haircut, so (they started the other divisions).”

Currently, Collard is one of 25 men vying for the Men’s Open Division Mullet championship. Along with the title of best mullet in the USA, the winner receives $2,500, a trophy, a pair of Pit Vipers sunglasses, and gear from USA Mullet Champ. There are also second and third place prize packages.

As of this writing, Collard said he was in fifth place, just over 500 votes out of first place, with five days left to vote.

In order to win the contest, Collard needs your help. From now until 11:59:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 29, you can vote daily for Collard’s Mullet as the best Mullet in the USA.

Collard faces some stiff competition and he’d liked to win, but he’s not taking things too seriously.

“My mullet’s older than most of the people in the competition,” Collard joked. “I’m having fun.”
