SOUTH CARROLLTON, Ky. — Mrs. Alva Carter Alverson “Mammie,” 93, peacefully departed from this world and entered into the presence of her Savior, Jesus Christ, on Monday, March 2, 2020, at 9:38 a.m. at her residence. Mammie resided in South Carrollton with her granddaughter, Jaime Lynn Miller, and great-granddaughters Victoria Lynn Miller and Amelia Claire Miller. Mammie’s granddaughter, Nicole Coopwood, played a primary role in providing care to Mammie.
Mammie was born April 4, 1926, outside of Graham, Kentucky, to Mr. and Mrs. Bill and Jessie Jordan Carter. Mammie was the oldest daughter of 11 children. Mammie is survived by her sister, Bonnie Clothier, of Hartford and brother Larry (Reba) Carter of Centertown. Mammie was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
Mammie was of the Pentecostal faith and a member of Mercer Baptist Church. Mammie loved Jesus and loved like Jesus. Mammie enjoyed loving people and she loved her children most of all.
During Mammie’s time on Earth, she loved to spend time with her family, more specifically showing her love by cooking her famous biscuit and gravy (that got her the nickname “gravy girl”), chicken and dumplings, and the absolute best banana pudding. Mammie also loved visiting The Great Smokey Mountains, blackberry pickin’, flowers, renovating homes, and any kind of sale she could find.
Mammie was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Mr. Elmer Eugene Alverson; the fathers of her children, Dewey David Griffin and James Lee Miller; and her great-great-grandson, Kyson Neal.
Mammie is survived by two precious daughters, Edna McGehee (Griffin) and Mary Smith (Griffin), and three wonderful sons, Dewey “Denny” Griffin, William Miller, and James “Doug” Miller. Mammie’s children blessed her with 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren.
Mammie’s grandson, Rev. Curtis McGehee, will be celebrating Mammie’s life on Wednesday, March 4, at 1 p.m. at Tucker Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday after 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
