NORTONVILLE, Ky. — The Kentucky State Police is warning the public about a phone scam making its way around the state.

According to the KSP, KSP Post 2 was contacted this morning by a concerned citizen. The citizen received a phone call from a male stating he’d won $170,000 and a new vehicle. The caller then requested $300 in order to process the winnings.

After the citizen sent $300, an additional amount of $2,500 was requested to finish the processing. In addition to the funds, the scammer requested the victim open a savings account and give them the account information.

The phone number of the scammer was possibly Jamaican, but it is believed it was a generated number that doesn’t exist.

At the present time, this is the only report of this type of scam received by Post 2.

The Kentucky State Police would like to remind everyone to never give out your Social Security Number or other personal information over the phone.

As a general guideline, you cannot win a contest you have not entered, and legitimate contests will not require you to send money to receive your winnings.

To report a possible scam, please contact the KSP Post 2 Madisonville at 1-270-676-3313 or toll-free, in Kentucky, at 1-800-222-5555 or contact your local law enforcement agency.
