HARTFORD, Ky. — William “Stewart” Payne, 93, of Hartford, passed away on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at his home. Stewart was born in Daviess County, Kentucky, March 8, 1925, to the late William J. and Mary Lettie Millay Payne.
Stewart was a carpenter, farmer, and proud World War II Marine veteran.
In addition to his parents, Stewart is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; his sisters, Mary Toon, Elizabeth Robertson, Sue King Pate, Bernice Ferguson Tucker, Margaret Ferguson, and Dorothy Fulton; his son-in-law, Buddy Carroll Huff; and his great-grandson, Nathan Lindsey.
Stewart is survived by his children, Larry (Bonnie) Payne, of Hartford, Gloria Huff, of Owensboro, Kentucky, Gail (Earl) Davis, of Whitesville, Kentucky, Nelda (David) Woosley, of Smith Grove, Kentucky, Roger (Marietta) Payne, of Hartford, Sharon (Mike) Coomes, of Whitesville, and Brian (Whitney) Payne, of Owensboro; 19 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 15 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Louise Johnson and Shelby Webster.
A funeral mass will be said on Thursday, Feb. 21, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church, with burial following at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville, Kentucky on Wednesday, Feb. 20, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Thursday, Feb. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
