OHIO COUNTY, Ky. — After enduring what may be the coldest days of the year last week, the area will now warm up to face the potential for heavy rainfall and a shot at strong to severe weather mid-week.
According to the National Weather Service in Louisville, plentiful moisture will combine with multiple disturbances moving along a boundary over the Ohio Valley resulting in moderate to heavy rainfall over southern Indiana and central Kentucky early Wednesday through Thursday night. At this time, the NWS is projecting Ohio County could see over four inches of rain during this period.
This will result in water collecting in low-lying and poor drainage areas, and will lead to rises on streams. Heavy rain will cause rises on area rivers, particularly the Ohio, Rough, Rolling Fork, Blue, and Green Rivers as well as Elkhorn Creek.
Along with the potential for flooding, the storm system may also produce strong to severe thunderstorms.
If the heavy rain isn’t enough, cold air is expected to push back into the area Thursday night into Friday morning changing the rain over to snow for a short time. No accumulations have been projected at this time. The NWS will no more closer to the end of the week.
Be sure to continue to monitor your weather providers for more information as this storm system moves into the area.
