LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. — Mary Agnes Branan Whitehead, 98, known to most as “Agnes,” died Nov. 24, 2018, at Hometown Manor Assisted Living in Lawrenceburg, KY. She was born Jan. 29, 1920, in Colquitt County, Georgia, to the late Neunan Caswell Branan and Maxie Graham Branan.
She graduated high school in Moultrie, Georgia, where she played basketball. She later attended business college in Albany, Georgia, where she met her future husband. She was married to the late Roy Whitehead, of Centertown, Kentucky, where they lived for many years.
She worked as a secretary at Albany Hardware in Albany and later at Centertown Elementary School. She was a homemaker and talented quilter. She was a member of Sand Spring Baptist Church in Lawrenceburg and former member of Centertown Baptist Church. She served as a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.
Including her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Alice Whitehead; son-in-law, Fred A. Craig; an infant daughter; and sister, Kate Branan Robinson.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Roy Don Whitehead and his wife, Sharon, of Somerset, Kentucky; two brothers, Carson Branan and his wife, Betty, of Tybee Island, Georgia, and Tony Branan and his wife, Betty Jean, of Hiawassee, Georgia; and four grandchildren, Branan Michael Whitehead and his wife, Emily Intravia, of New York City, Aaron Thomas Whitehead, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr. Adam Whitehead Craig, of Lexington, Kentucky, and Leah Whitehead Craig and her husband, Dr. Timothy Thornberry Jr., of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Visitation will be Thursday, Nov. 29, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Ritchie & Peach Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg and on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Centertown Baptist Church in Centertown with a funeral service at 1 p.m. and burial to follow in Centertown Cemetery, arranged by Bevil Brothers Funeral Home.
