CENTERTOWN, Ky. — Neal T. Ashby, 81, of Centertown, went to his heavenly home on Friday, Aug. 31, 2018, at his residence. He was born Feb. 26, 1937, in Beaver Dam, Kentucky, to the late Earl Pendleton Ashby and Clara I. Daniel Ashby Halcomb.

Mr. Ashby retired from Peabody Coal Company where he worked at Ken Surface Mine. He was a member of United Mine Workers Local 8941, and Independence Baptist Church in McHenry, Kentucky.

Mr. Ashby was the owner of multiple restaurants, including the Coal Nugget and Wagon Wheel. He enjoyed spending time at the restaurants with his friends, watching “his” birds and squirrels, and watching UK basketball. He played and coached basketball and softball for many years.

Aside from his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Sherrill Eugene Ashby; and two sisters, Ellen Ann Colonna and Linda Jo Ashby.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, five children, Jeffrey Neal (Pat) Ashby, of Cromwell, Kentucky, Russell Wayne Ashby, of Owensboro, Kentucky, Kimberly Fern Ashby, of Beaver Dam, Chris Daniel (Veronica) Ashby, of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Jody Shane (Denise) Ashby, of Utica, Kentucky; 17 grandchildren, James (Mandy) Ashby, Kodi (Lance) Shutt, Adam Ashby (Melanie Fuller), Lindsay (John) Hall, Kori (David) Baker, Tara (Patrick) Fitzgerald, Savannah Ashby, Nathan Thomas Autry, Megan Juliet Fern Shields, Crystal Ashby, Melissa (Heath) Hancock, Joseph Ashby, Kaylee Ashby, Ethan Williams, Zoe Williams, Camden Williams, and Ryder Williams; one brother, Earl (Janet) Ashby, of McHenry; one sister, Captola (Danny) Southard, of McHenry; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, at William L. Danks Funeral Home in Beaver Dam with Rev. Terry Tarrance officiating. Burial will follow in Sunnyside Cemetery in Beaver Dam. Friends may visit with Mr. Ashby’s family from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral Wednesday at the funeral home.

The family would like to thanks Hospice of Ohio County, Dr. Mills, Dr. Hodskins, and Owensboro Health Regional Hospital for the excellent care Mr. Ashby received.
