OWENSBORO, Ky. — Mary L. Hawkins, 87, of Owensboro passed away Fridaym, May 25, 2018, under the care of Hermitage Care and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Hawkins was born April 8, 1931, in Daviess County, Kentucky, to the late William Earl Survant and Anna Rowland Survant.
Mary worked at the G.E. plant in Owensboro for many years before returning to school where she earned her LPN degree while raising three girls and was employed at Mercy Hospital as a surgical nurse for 24 years before retiring.
Mary, her husband, Gene, and their collies lived on a small farm in Maceo, Kentuck, before moving to town when he became ill.
They were members of the Greenbriar Wagon Club and loved to go south and west on extended camping trips during the winter months. Mary loved the holidays and family gatherings where she often did much of the cooking. She never forgot birthdays and made quilts for the graduations of all her children and grandchildren. Mary was a compassionate, loving, and easy-going person who was a gifted caregiver.
Mrs. Hawkins was also preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Gene Hawkins, in 2015, and a brother, William Earl Survant Jr., in 1998.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters, Debbie Brown and husband, Randall, Linda Love and husband, Frank, both of Owensboro, and Jenny Sholar and husband, Dan, of Frankfort, Kentucky; stepdaughters, Vickie Hundley and husband, William, of Owensboro, and Melissa Rock and husband, Kevin, of Beaver Dam, Kentucky; stepbrother, John Survant; stepsister, Earlene Survant; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be noon Wednesday, May 30, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with Pastor Donnie Thomas officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Rosehill Cemetery.
