HAWESVILLE, Ky. — Kenneth Dale Dowell, 74, of Hawesville, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at his residence. He was born in Frymire, Kentucky, on Dec. 14, 1943, the son of the late Bernard and Margaret Dowell.

Ken retired from the United States Army as a CW4 in 1981 after 20 years of service. During that time he received the following medals and awards: Purple Heart, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and Master Parachutist Badge.

He later retired in 2002 from Owensboro High School as the JROTC instructor. Ken was a member of the VFW and American Legion and enjoyed farming.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bernard Dowell and William Dowell, and two brothers-in-law, Erman Hamilton and Jim Wiley.

Ken is survived by his wife, Valerie Dowell, of Hawesville; three children, Teresa Inman (Marc), of Louisville, Kentucky, Becky Dowell and David Dowell, of Columbus, Ohio; two stepdaughters, Christy Turnham, of Owensboro, Kentucky, and Amanda Hagan (Brooke), of St. Petersburg, Florida; two grandchildren, Nina Pixie and Michael Thomas Inman; three sisters, Barbara Hamilton, of Philpot, Kentucky, Mary Wiley, of Hartford, Kentucky, and Hope Stephenson (Tom), of Henderson, Kentucky.

Funeral services will be held at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Hardinsburg, Kentucky, on Tuesday, May 1, at 3 p.m. CDT. Burial with military honors will be in the Horsley Chapel Cemetery near Hardinsburg. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. CDT on Tuesday.
