BEAVER DAM, Ky. — A suspicious object, thought to have been a pipe bomb, was destroyed in Oldham Park last night.

According to Beaver Dam Police Chief Mike Allen, sometime around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday evening, an unnamed person was walking in Oldham Park near the pavilion by the tennis courts, when they noticed what they thought was a “pipe bomb.” The person found a Beaver Dam Police Officer who went to investigate the suspicious object. The officer wasn’t sure if it was indeed a pipe bomb, but it did look like one.

The suspicious object was described as cylindrical, about 4 or 5 inches long, with electrical or duct tape wrapped around it. According to Allen, the object also had pins or needles tapped around the outside.

As a precaution, the BDPD called in the Owensboro Police Department Bomb Squad to investigate the object. Around 9 p.m., using a robot, the OPD Bomb Squad shot the suspicious object with a shotgun destroying it. The object did not detonate after being shot.

After further investigation, the OPD Bomb Squad couldn’t determine if the object was indeed a live pipe bomb, or someone trying to make something which looked like a pipe bomb. No powder or explosive material was found. No shrapnel was found inside the object, just the needles or pins taped to the outside.

The investigation is ongoing and the BDPD has several people of interest in mind.

Allen asks if anyone sees anything suspicious or has any information on who may have made the object or placed it in Oldham Park, to call Ohio County Dispatch at 270-298-4411.
