OHIO COUNTY, Ky. — Late last year the Ohio County Monitor and former Ohio County newsman Sam Ford partnered with the Tow Center for Digital Journalism at Columbia University for a project related to our switch to a subscription-based business model.
As part of this project, the Ohio County Monitor will hold three events later this month with two of them being at the Ohio County Public Library.
The first event will be our Liars’ Table Tour Friday, Jan. 19, where my brother Lee, Sam Ford, and I will visit various community stores over the course of the morning. These are places where folks gather to have a cup of coffee and tell big fish stories, talk about what is happening in their communities and the news of the day.
This tour is mostly for us to visit areas out in the county and hear what’s on people’s minds. Below is the schedule for the morning of Jan. 19,
6 a.m. – Raceway Market in McHenry
7 a.m. – Bishop’s Grocery
8 a.m. – Rockport Market
9:20 a.m. – Horse Branch General Store
10:30 a.m. – Cromwell Market
Our second event is about the news business in general and will be at the Ohio County Public Library at 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 22
This will be like an “ask me anything” event where we discuss and answer questions related to the business of operating a news organization, how we do what we do, how we make money, and how technology and economic changes affect these things.
The last event is “Writing About Your Community” and coincides with our community contributor part of the project where we put out a call for people interested in submitting pieces about their community or any subject they’d like to write about.
The idea was a bit of a throw back to the old society columns appearing in newspapers years ago.
We’ll have the people who responded to our call for community contributors and discuss the pieces they’ve submitted which we’ll post throughout the rest of January. They’ll also offer tips for anyone who would wants to contribute a piece themselves.
This event will be at the Ohio County Public Library Annex at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 30.
The public is invited to attend any and all these events. We hope to get the opportunity to visit with people and discuss the Ohio County community.
