HARTFORD, Ky. — The Ohio County Food Pantry is in need of donations to serve Ohio County school children with its Backpack Program. The Food Pantry’s Backpack Program sends food home for the weekend with students in need.

According to Starla Cravens, with Wayland Elementary’s Family Resource Office, Wayland has around 65 to 75 children who are part of the Backpack Program. In fact, without the aid of this program, many of those children would go to bed hungry every night.

This morning Cravens received word funding was low at the Food Pantry for the Backpack Program. The Food Pantry gets the food filled backpacks from Feeding America. It costs $120 per child, per year, to provide this service. It costs around $7,800-$9,000 to cover Wayland’s students.

Cravens said unless more money for the program is raised, there limits may be placed on the number of children who can receive a backpack of food.

Much of the Backpack Program’s funding comes from people and faith-based groups, such as Sunday school classes and women’s groups.
