HARTFORD, Ky. — Ohio County Sheriff Tracy Beatty is warning the community about a scam just popping up in the state.

According to Sheriff Beatty, the Kentucky State Police investigated a case, in the Richmond area, in which an elderly woman was scammed. It was noted, the KSP had never seen or heard of the scam until this particular case.

The KSP reported a man went to a woman’s home and said he was from her bank. The scammer said he knew the woman had recently used an ATM and told the woman the money in the ATM was counterfeit.

The scammer asked if the woman still had the money. She did and the scammer asked to see it. After receiving the money, the scammer confirmed the money was counterfeit and told her he had to take it back to the bank.

The woman later called the bank and found out she had been scammed.

While this incident happened in the Richmond area, it may not be long until it reaches Ohio County or the surrounding area.

Sheriff Beatty asks the community to be aware of this scam and to call the Sheriff’s Office at 270-298-4444 if this happens to you.
