R.C. Johnson, 89, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015, in Hartford. He was born in the Sunnydale Community of Ohio County on Sept. 4, 1925, son of the late Barney and Mary Elizabeth Whobrey Johnson.
R.C. served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946, received two bronze stars and Navy Commendation for Service in the European and American Theaters during WWII. After the service he married Anna Marie Porter(8/30/1946) and entered college at The University of Kentucky. Upon graduating he taught school at Christian County and Hartford High School. He was instrumental in the formation of Ohio County Vocational School. He left the school system to become owner of Porter Leach Hardware, where he remained till he retired in 1990. R.C. then worked as a greeter at Walmart for seven years.
R.C. served on the Board of Directors at Green River Electric which became Kenergy, was president of the Ohio County Jaycees, chairman of Ohio County Democrat Party in the 1960’s & 1970’s and a deacon at Hartford Baptist Church.
R.C. was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Marie Porter Johnson, in April of 2005.
He is survived by three children, two daughters, Bonne Scott(David) and Beverly Bratcher(Iman), both of Hartford; one son, Chris Johnson(Tracie), of Murray, Ky.; five grandchildren, Stacy Woolen (Dewey), Brian Tichenor (Ginger), Andrew Porter(Kim), Jordan Bratcher and Shelby Johnson; and five great grandchildren, Lauren and Lindsay Woolen, Ross and Grant Tichenor and Brody Porter; and one sister, Gail Waltrip, of Owensboro.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at Bevil Bros. Funeral Home in Beaver Dam. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford. Friends may visit with the family from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Monday and 9 p.m. until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
