Avery Lee Smith, 79, of Greenville, Ky., died Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 2015, at 7:39 a.m., in the Owensboro Health Regional Hospital Owensboro, Ky., after several months of illness. Avery was born March 12, 1935, in Harlan County, Ky., the son of Walter Smith and Lillie Shipley Smith.
He was a UMWA coal miner for 30 years before retiring. He was a Army Veteran of Korean War and was a member of Luzerne General Baptist Church.
Avery was preceded in death by his parents and son Eric Shawn Smith in 1999.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon Feb. 28, at 1 p.m. from Gary’s Funeral Home Greenville, Ky., by Rev. Kerry Vincent, Rev. Brian McElwain, and Rev. Curtis McGehee. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery Greenville, Ky.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Tommie Jean Miniard Smith, of Greenville, Ky.; son, Mark Avery Smith, of Greenville, Ky.; daughter-in-law, Rose Marie Smith, of Greenville, Ky.; two granddaughters, Leigha (Dustin) Winslow, of Owensboro, Ky., Markie Marie Smith, of Greenville, Ky.; great-grandson, Cohen Winslow; and brother, J. W. (Irene) Smith, of Beaver Dam, Ky.
