Dorothy Mae Shrull James, 88, formerly of Ohio County, Ky., passed from this life peacefully on Dec. 7, 2014, at Redbanks Nursing & Rehabilitation, Henderson, Ky., after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Dorothy was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Logan County, Ky., and moved with her family to the Matanzas Community in Ohio County when she was a little girl.
She attended Coffman School near Point Pleasant in Ohio County. As a young woman, she worked as a waitress at Casebier’s Restaurant in Hartford, Ky. Dorothy was employed by Cowden Manufacturing in Beaver Dam, Ky., in the late 1960’s, and later worked at Hurston’s and Elaine’s in Hartford. She was an avid gardener and loved sewing, quilting, crocheting and, most of all, being with her family.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Elbert James, in 1997; her parents, Charlie and Mamie Pogue Shrull; eight brothers, Willie, Rueben, Homer, Burlie, Clyde, Claud, Datron and Charles “Junior” Shrull; nephews, Robert “Bob,” Gary and Lindell Shrull; and a niece, Myrna Shrull Mallory.
She is survived by her two beloved sisters; Ella Shrull Desper, of Clarksville, Ind., and Nina Shrull Murphy, of Owensboro; a sister-in-law, Minnie Shrull, of Morganfield, Ky.; three sons, Dallas (Sue), of Hartford; Roger (Trudy) of Clarksville, Tenn., Stanley and special friend, Dee, of Russelville, Ky.; daughter, Vickie (Hunter) Davis, of Sturgis, Ky.; four grandsons, Dallas, Jr., of Tennessee, Charles “Chip,” of Florida, and Samuel James, of Oklahoma, Jonathan Davis, of Henderson, Ky.; five granddaughters, Reta James, of Hartford, Shaloah James Champion, of Tulsa, Okla., Sara James Christensen, of Liberty Lake, Wash., Myra James Soward, of Clarksville, Tenn., and Lauren Davis of Bowling Green, Ky.; 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved very much.
Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. at Bevil Bros. Funeral Home, Hwy 62 East, in Beaver Dam, Ky. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Centertown Cemetery, Centertown, Ky.
