Opal B. Duke, 102, of Hartford, Ky., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at Dogwood Retreat in Hartford. She was born April 11, 1911, in Lyon County, Ky., the daughter of the late Joseph Wickliff Brooks and Alice Fithen Brooks.
Mrs. Duke retired as Clerk of Ohio County Selective Service Board, was a member of Hartford United Methodist Church, a member of the Lizzie Ford Chapter 112 Hartford Order of Eastern Star and served as Grand Marshall of Kentucky Order of Eastern Star and was a Kentucky Colonel. After retirement she became an avid golfer and bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Albert Duke in 1974; two brothers, Hugh Brooks and Alton Brooks and two sisters, Treva Jones and Ruth Brooks.
Survivors include two daughters, Alice Duke Shephard (Jim) of Owensboro and Dr. Beverly Brooks James of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; four grandchildren, Scott Shephard (Denise), Ann Eison, Admiral Jan Tighe (David) and James Duke Chinn (Jenny); six great-grandchildren and one sister, Hazel Sutherland of Mayfield, Ky.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 20, at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford, with Rev. David Westerfield and Rev. Bob Clements officiating. Visitation will be Saturday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford.
