Violet June Shown, 77, of Hartford, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, at Ohio County Hospital. She was born on July 7, 1935, in Ohio County to the late Herman Martin and Gladys Gray Martin.

She retired from Bob’s IGA in Hartford where she worked as the secretary. She was also a member of Washington United Methodist Church and enjoyed her RV and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Claudis Dean Shown, on February 14, 1994 and a son, Donald Gene Shown, on Nov.27, 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Embry and her husband, Gene, of Atmore, Ala., and Debbie Hart and her husband, Greg, of Hartford; 10 grandchildren, Sarah McKay and her husband Brian, Brandon Parker, Amy Boling and her husband, Brandon, Andrea Morgan, Alison Burden, Misty Embry, Kerrie Bryan and her husband, Barry, Greg Hart and his wife, Jessica, Chad Hart and his wife, Kristen and Brock Hart; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Martine Foreman of Narrows, KY and two special friends, Paul Newcom, Sr. and Paul Newcom, Jr. both of Hartford.

The funeral service will be Sunday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Miller-Schapmire Funeral Home in Hartford with Mary James officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Hartford. Visitation will be Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again Sunday from 9 a.m. to the time of service at the funeral home.
