James “Jim” Davis Duke, 77, of Bumpass, Va., formerly of Hartford, Ky., died Sunday Dec. 16, 2012, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Va. He was born in Owensboro, Ky., on Sept. 10, 1935, to the late William Alfred Duke and Helen Westerfield Duke.
He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and was employed by Appalachian Regional Hospitals for many years as Director of Hospital Material Management. He was a member of Rouzie’s Chapel United Methodist Church. His retirement years were busy ones, filled by community service and volunteer work with the West Vanover Wood Ministry. He was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Dean Gibson on Dec. 23, 2004.
Surviving include his wife of 59 years, Beverly Daniel Duke of Bumpass; one son, Michael David Duke and his wife, Julie McCready Duke and their children, Natalie and Jacob.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, at the Rouzie’s Chapel United Methodist Church, 21089 Greenbay Rd. Beaver Dam, Va.
The family will receive friends following the service. The family request expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Rouzie’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
